A long hard season finally came to an end for the 2nd XI at Denham on Saturday, and thankfully with the right result which ensured 1st division cricket would be being played next season.
With only 8 points required to secure promotion, the Great Kingshill players had to try and put that fact to the back of their minds, and made an excellent start reducing Denham to 28/4, having won the toss and electing to bowl. A quiet middle period allowed the Denham middle order to consolidate, and with their No 6 making 140*, they eventually closed on 253/8.
In reply a solid start from Michaels and Young against the spinners and the old ball, and then the quicks with the new ball, helped to settle any early nerves. When Young departed with the score on 76, it was left to Michaels and Leybourne to safely guide the team to the required 175-run mark, which would secure enough match points to gain promotion, Leybourne dutifully driving a full-toss through extra cover.
With that important milestone out of the way, Michaels and Leybourne made the most of being able to bat in relatively care-free circumstances, and the ball continued to find it's way to the boundary with regular frequency. Leybourne was sadly unable to see the job through, and was out for an excellent 78, however with Paul Michaels 104* at the other end, it was left to Stuart Morgan to hit the winning runs, and secure the win in what has proved to be an excellent season for the 2nd XI.
